What are SOC Services (& Do You Need them)?

4th September 2024

Security Operations Centre (SOC) Services play a critical role in protecting organisations from malicious cyber actors, who could threaten their security and safety (be it financial, reputational or physical), and that of their staff, clients and other contacts. Cyber protection is a rapidly growing industry, and numbers of specialist providers have grown significantly in recent years, in response to the increasing number and severity of cyber threats.

But do you need them?  Well, that depends on what damage a security breach would mean to your businesses and how much damage that could do. Obviously, no breach is going to be beneficial, and most businesses could not afford any loss, either financial or reputational. And what price do you put on the personal security of your staff, clients, contacts?

So, what do SOC services actually do and how can they protect your data? First, they are more specialist and have access to more advanced technology and information sources than most organisations could normally achieve inhouse, or via their normal IT service provider. Secondly, this is not a bolt on service: SOC’s focus exclusively on cyber security, employing experts in their field, who are continually training in the latest technology and intelligence. Services encompass a wide range of activities, but all will cover the following areas:

  • 24/7 Threat Monitoring: Continuous surveillance of networks, systems, and data to identify potential security threats.

  • Incident Response: Immediate action taken to mitigate and manage security incidents when they occur.

  • Threat Intelligence: Gathering and analysing data on potential threats to stay ahead of cyber attackers.

  • Vulnerability Management: Identifying and addressing security weaknesses in systems and applications.

  • Compliance Management: Ensuring that security practices meet regulatory and industry standards.

This stuff is no longer a thing of action movies, this is really happening, and it’s happening without you even being aware!
